Job Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Tax Manager to join our growing tax team in Houston, TX. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of experience in tax compliance, planning, and research, ideally in public accounting. In this role, you will manage tax services for a diverse client portfolio, including individuals, corporations, partnerships, and S-corporations. You will also lead a team, build strong client relationships, and work on complex tax matters that contribute to the firm's ongoing success.
Key Responsibilities:
Tax Compliance & Reporting:
- Oversee the preparation and review of federal, state, and local tax returns for a variety of clients, ensuring timely and accurate filings.
- Review workpapers and supporting documentation to ensure completeness and accuracy.
- Manage tax compliance for clients across multiple industries and tax structures, including individuals, corporations, and partnerships.
Tax Planning & Consulting:
- Provide proactive tax planning and consulting to help clients optimize their tax positions and minimize liabilities.
- Advise on complex tax matters, including mergers and acquisitions, restructuring, tax credits, and international tax issues.
- Implement tax-saving strategies, keeping clients informed of tax law changes and their potential impact.
Client Management & Relationships:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, addressing their tax concerns and offering practical solutions to complex issues.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships by providing personalized tax advice and exceptional service.
- Lead client meetings, presenting tax strategies and solutions in a clear and actionable manner.
Team Leadership & Development:
- Supervise and mentor junior staff and senior associates, providing guidance and review of their work.
- Conduct performance evaluations and support the professional development of team members through career progression planning.
- Foster a collaborative and growth-oriented team culture.
Research & Technical Knowledge:
- Stay current on changes in federal, state, and local tax laws, IRS rulings, and industry developments to provide accurate advice and ensure compliance.
- Conduct detailed research on complex tax issues and deliver clear, practical solutions to clients.
- Assist in the development of internal processes to enhance operational efficiency.
Special Projects:
- Lead or support special projects such as tax audits, tax provision work, and other consulting initiatives.
- Collaborate with other departments (audit, advisory, etc.) to offer comprehensive client solutions.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. A Master’s in Taxation or an MBA with a focus in tax is preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in tax, preferably in public accounting.
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations.
- Experience with tax software (e.g., ProSystem fx, CCH, Thomson Reuters) is advantageous.
Certifications:
- CPA (Certified Public Accountant) license is required.
