The Director, Payroll is part of the HR Operations leadership team and brings a strategic vision to the payroll function. This position oversees all aspects of payroll, including multi location hourly pay, driver pay and exempt pay. Ensures accurate and timely processing of payroll, compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, and continuous process improvement. Implements tax credit programs such as WOTC, CAEZ, New Jersey BEIP, etc. for all business units, working with the Tax and People departments to accomplish. Partners heavily with field leaders, HR Business Partners, external partners, and department heads.
- Designs, evaluates, develops, recommends, and implements short-term and long-term payroll policies, processes, and system enhancements designed to improve business processes for accuracy and efficiency within the department.
- Provides pro-active leadership and guidance to the teams regarding resolution support associated with payroll.
- Directs local payroll staff and staff located in each business unit to provide accurate and timely payroll processing and resolutions.
- Analyzes complex transactions, identifies issues, and works with internal and external operational teams to identify causes, assess risks, and implement plans to eliminate future occurrence.
- Establishes relations and partners strategically with various internal departments including Accounting, HR Systems, People Data & Analytics, and Legal, and manage external payroll service vendor relationships.
- Provides thought leadership within HR Operations
- Ensure process documentation and standard operating procedures are always maintained and current.
- Leads a team of diverse and varying levels of experience and provides coaching and learning opportunities, utilizing each team member’s strengths while continuing to develop and prepare team members for the next level or other internal and external opportunities.
- Prepares participates, and engages in audits, including WC, internal and external.
- Drafts and maintains open and effective communications to employees and business partners regarding new payroll developments.
- Develops a thorough understanding of the capabilities and shortcomings of existing processes, including timekeeping and benefits, and identifies opportunities for continuous improvement and leverages them to business operations.
- Identifies and mitigates potential payroll-related risks and implements controls to prevent errors, fraud, or compliance violations.
- Partners with People Data & Analytics to ensure proper development and analysis of audits and reporting, ensuring information is available in a timely and efficient manner.
Ensures the confidentiality and security of payroll data, adhering to data privacy regulations and safeguarding sensitive employee information.
Qualifications:
- 10+ years of management experience.
- 10+ years' experience with multistate payroll.
- 10+ years’ experience with 20,000 or more employees with customized (not outsourced) payroll solutions.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration, with a focus in Payroll, from an accredited college or university required.
- Workday experience required. Payroll system conversion experience is preferred.
- Certified Payroll Professional or equivalent required.
- Extensive knowledge and accountability for compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local wage and hour laws.
- Understanding of CDL A Driver component pay and related supplemental rates.
- Exceptional interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills required.
- Strong analytical and research skills for troubleshooting problem resolution and system improvement.
- Proven history of successful leadership.
- Project lead experience with integration of payroll systems.
