Our client, a Houston area law firm, is seeking an experienced Controller/CPA to join their team.
 
The Controller will be responsible for all accounting activities and oversees accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems. The Controller is responsible for the integrity of the Firm’s financial information, tax reporting under the direction of external tax accountants and ensures that systems, procedures, and controls are in place. This position works closely with the Managing Partner, Partners, Attorneys, Paralegals, and the Firm’s Administrative Support Staff to support our client needs. Our client is seeking a licensed CPA, who is detail oriented, a great listener, task-driven, client-focused, and is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
 
To be successful in this role you must be self-motivated, initiative driven and work well with a collaborative team. Also, the candidate should be tech savvy (be proficient in using Microsoft365 – Word, Excel, and Access) to analyze financial information, prepare charts, financial statements, and other ad hoc reports as required for the Managing Partner, Senior Lawyer Counsel, Partners, and outside counsel. 
 
Controller’s Job Duties:
·         Operates under the direction of Managing Partner
·         Supervises a department which consists of two teams organized by function, and they are: (1) Assistant Controller/Accounting Manager and two (2) AP Specialist, Accounting Systems Manager, and a Trust Manager, a Settlement Clerk, and two Trust Clerks.
·         Prepares monthly cash flow statements
·         Maintains the Managing Partner’s Capital Account
·         Handles full financial reporting package preparation on a cash and accrual basis as applicable
·         Maintains the accounting system, NetSuite.
·         Oversee the migration from Emburse to Concur, expense reimbursement software which includes working with lawyers, paralegals, and legal assistants to ensure invoice payment deadlines are met on a timely basis
·         Works with external tax accountants to facilitate the preparation of quarterly estimates, annual Form 1065, tax and franchise tax return, and associated K-1’s for seven Partners
·         Works in tandem with the Assistant Controller to prepare quarterly consolidation of financial statement reporting and to estimate income to Partners
·         Supervises the Monthly Close with the Assistant Controller
·         Supervises the Trust Settlement Process
·         Provides Ad hoc reporting as requested by the Managing Partner or other senior leadership as applicable.
·         Approves/Audits payments to vendors and clients
·         Communicates with the Firm’s financial institution to manage the financial relationship
·         Has the ability to understand and interpret various contracts and agreements
 
Requirements/Qualifications:
·         10+ years of multi-entity/high volume experience due to reconciliation of our mass tort cases and settlements
·         5+ years of supervisory experience and management skills
·         Self-starter with strong work ethic and superior attention for detail
·         Ability to multitask with little to no supervision
·         Excellent writing, organization, and communication skills
·         Maintaining confidentiality is highly important
·         Must be computer proficient in Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams, Outlook, and general case management systems accustomed to litigation work
·         Must be deadline driven and efficient with time management for the Accounting Department to meet the needs of the Firm
 

Preferred Skills:
Law Firm experience with a Mass Tort environment a plus
