Position Overview: Our client is looking for a Model Shop / Tool Room Machinist (MSTR) who plays a pivotal role in leading and managing the technical operations of our R&D machine shop. This role involves developing advanced methods for processing intricate, low volume engine components with experimental materials while ensuring a safe working environment. The MSTR collaborates closely with the Engineering Team to refine hardware design, fixtures, and machining and measurement processes utilizing SolidWorks and Mastercam. This position is responsible for guiding machinists, identifying training needs, and driving the continuous enhancement of quality control procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Team Leadership: Lead and mentor a team of 2-3 machinists by providing expert guidance, training, and support to achieve high productivity and adhere to stringent quality standards. Demonstrate adaptability and resourcefulness in navigating a dynamic and fast-paced work environment.
- Planning and Coordination: Work collaboratively with engineering, engine build, and materials planning teams to strategically schedule and prioritize work orders to maintain on-time delivery to our internal customers.
- Quality Control and Improvement: Design, implement, and maintain robust quality control processes to enhance the success rate of new and existing projects. Drive continuous improvement initiatives based on performance data and feedback.
- Workflow Optimization: Define and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for all machine shop activities. Utilize KPI data to identify areas for improvement and implement strategies to optimize workflow and operational efficiency.
- Equipment Maintenance: Coordinate with maintenance teams to ensure all machinery is properly maintained, calibrated, and serviced, minimizing downtime and ensuring precision in all operations.
- Safety Compliance: Enforce and uphold safety protocols, ensuring all team members adhere to safety regulations. Actively participate in safety meetings and inspections to foster a secure and compliant working environment.
- Training and Development: Design and facilitate comprehensive training programs to enhance machinists’ skills in programming, manufacturing, and measurement. Promote a culture of continuous learning and professional growth within the team.
- Effective Communication: Maintain clear and open communication channels with other departments, such as engineering and procurement, to facilitate collaboration and resolve cross-functional issues effectively.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed and accurate records of production activities, machine maintenance, and quality control measures. Generate and present reports to track performance and support decision-making.
- Budget Management: Assist in developing and managing the machine shop budget. Monitor expenses related to materials, equipment, and personnel, ensuring cost-effective use of resources.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent; relevant certifications or technical training preferred.
- Proven experience as a Tool Maker or Model Maker, with a strong background in new product development.
- Extensive knowledge of machining processes, CNC programming, and related technologies.
- Demonstrated hands-on leadership ability with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Familiarity with safety regulations and quality control standards.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to identifying and implementing process improvements.
