1. Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Fabrication & Substrates
  • FR-4 (Flame Retardant 4): The standard glass-reinforced epoxy laminate material used as the base substrate for most rigid PCBs.
  • Substrate: The base material structural layer that provides the mechanical support and electrical insulation for PCB traces.
  • Prepreg: Fiberglass cloth impregnated with uncured resin used to bond individual layers of a multilayer PCB together.
  • Copper Clad Laminate (CCL): A base substrate material pre-laminated with a thin layer of copper foil on one or both sides.
  • Via (Vertical Interconnect Access): A copper-plated hole drilled through PCB layers to establish electrical connections between them.
  • Blind Via: A plated hole that connects an outer layer of a multi-layer PCB to one or more inner layers, but does not pass all the way through.
  • Buried Via: A plated hole completely enclosed within the inner layers of a multilayer PCB, invisible from the outside.
  • Microvia: A very small via drilled by lasers, typically used in High-Density Interconnect (HDI) boards for advanced routing.
  • Solder Mask: A protective, polymer coating layer applied to copper traces to prevent oxidation and accidental solder bridging.
  • Silkscreen: The printed ink layer on a PCB containing text, component outlines, logos, and reference designators for assembly guidance.
  • Gerber File: The standard vector file format used by PCB design software to communicate manufacturing blueprints to fabrication houses.
  • Panelization: The process of grouping multiple smaller PCBs onto a larger single panel to optimize automated assembly efficiency.
2. SMT (Surface Mount Technology) Assembly
  • Pick-and-Place Machine: High-speed automated robotic equipment that accurately selects electronic components and positions them onto a PCB.
  • Solder Paste: A sticky mixture of microscopic solder balls and flux used to temporarily hold components before reflow.
  • Stencil Printing: The process of squeezing solder paste through a laser-cut metal stencil onto designated PCB landing pads.
  • Reflow Soldering: The thermal process of heating solder paste to melt the alloy, forming permanent electrical joints.
  • Reflow Oven: A multi-zone industrial heating tunnel that subjects populated PCBs to a precise thermal profile for soldering.
  • Thermal Profile: The graph mapping time against temperature to ensure safe, reliable solder melting without damaging components.
  • De-paneling: The manufacturing step where individual, completed PCBs are cut, routed, or broken away from the main panel.
  • Component Feeder: A mechanical device that supplies tape, reel, or tray components continuously into pick-and-place machines.
  • Fiducial Mark: A small, circular copper target on a PCB used by automated machine cameras as alignment reference points.
  • Tombstoning: A manufacturing defect where a component stands up vertically on one end during the reflow soldering process.
  • Solder Bridging: An unintended electrical short circuit created when solder accidentally connects two adjacent pads or leads.
  • Voiding: The formation of microscopic air bubbles or cavities within a completed solder joint, reducing its structural reliability.
3. Component Types & Packaging
  • SMD (Surface Mount Device): Electronic components designed to be soldered directly onto the surface pads of a board.
  • Through-Hole Technology (THT): An assembly method where component leads are inserted into drilled holes and soldered from beneath.
  • BGA (Ball Grid Array): A high-density integrated circuit package featuring a matrix of solder balls on its underside.
  • QFP (Quad Flat Package): A surface-mount integrated circuit package with gull-wing leads extending from all four sides.
  • IC (Integrated Circuit): A microchip or semiconductor wafer containing a complex network of fabricated transistors, resistors, and capacitors.
  • Passive Component: Electronic elements that do not require external power to operate, such as basic resistors and capacitors.
  • Active Component: Electronic parts that can manipulate, amplify, or control electrical signals using an external power source.
4. Quality Control & Inspection
  • AOI (Automated Optical Inspection): Camera-based quality inspection that scans PCBs for component presence, alignment, and defects.
  • AXI (Automated X-Ray Inspection): Non-destructive inspection utilizing X-rays to look inside hidden solder joints, like those under BGAs.
  • ICT (In-Circuit Testing): An electrical testing method that probes a board's individual test points to check component values.
  • FCT (Functional Testing): A final testing phase that powers up the device to simulate its actual operational environment.
  • Flying Probe Test: A flexible tester using multiple moving robotic probes to check electrical continuity without custom fixtures.
5. Compliance & Environmental Standards
  • RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances): European directive restricting dangerous materials like lead and mercury in electronic manufacturing.
  • WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment): Regulations governing the collection, recycling, and recovery of end-of-life electronic goods.
  • IPC Standards: Global industry guidelines regulating the design, assembly, quality inspection, and reliability of electronic hardware assemblies.
  • ESD (Electrostatic Discharge): The sudden flow of static electricity that can permanently damage sensitive semiconductor components during handling.
  • Cleanroom: A controlled environment with low levels of environmental pollutants like dust, airborne microbes, and chemical vapors.
  • Conformal Coating: A thin protective chemical film applied to electronic circuitry to protect against moisture, dust, and chemicals.
